When did you first attend the SODEM protest outside Parliament and why did you come? 

October 2017.   I was – and am – passionately anti-Brexit. I met Steve Bray at a Remain March in Manchester at the Tory Conference in September 2017, and he told me about it.

50s

How frequently did you come and when was the last time you attended?

Usually once every 2 weeks, sometimes a few days in a row; it depends on my work schedule.   January 29th, 2020 was my last visit – vulnerabilities to Covid means I haven’t been since 🙁   

How far from Westminster do you live and what was your travelling time?

60 miles- 3 hours, sometimes 120 miles- 4.5 hours.   I have to live on a tight budget, so it’s not the fastest!    

What’s your favourite memory?

Maybe the day a depleted group of about 15 of us (total for the day) were in freezing cold and wind, with swirling snow. It showed we were serious and determined. Some of us then went on to the N°10 vigil. And 2 days later the whole country was locked in by snowdrifts. 

Tell me your story

I’m a working class woman, and the way that Remainers are characterised as elitist and privileged annoys me intensely. It’s one of the many, many, many lies that the Brexit leaders told.     

I’ve always worked to make a society that’s open and inclusive, where all the people marginalised for so many different structural reasons are accepted and valued. Brexit violates everything I believe in.      

I’ve been on almost every march, street stalls and meetings to try to stop it…. And talked to anyone happy to discuss it. A mixture of media controlled by Brexiters, cowed, cowardly and frequently corrupted politicians, and a public not realising (or caring) what was going on has led us to the cliff-edge of a NoDeal ToryBrexit.     

It’s a massive power grab by the right wing and the super rich that will impoverish everyone else. Brexit makes the UK look stupid and uncaring, and will destroy both the social fabric of the country, and its economy. A totally unnecessary waste. I’m furious, frustrated, and heartbroken about it.     

Being denied a second vote was an insult from MPs (who claim to support democracy).
