When did you first attend the SODEM protest outside Parliament and why did you come?

11 December 2017. I came down to attend a debate in Westminster Hall following a pro-EU petition and to join SODEM.

Roughly how old are you?

Just 68!

How frequently did you come and when was the last time you attended?

Every two months from 11 December 2017 to 30 October 2019. 10 visits.

How far from Westminster do you live and what was your travelling time?

227 miles. Approximately  5 hours.

What’s your favourite memory?

On 4 September 2019, three of our pro-EU Liverpool MPs came out to meet us outside Westminster: Louise Ellman, Luciana Berger and María Eagle. It was at a time when an extension to the A50 period was being debated in Parliament. There was a gang of us from Liverpool for Europe, our great friends at SODEM and our MPs, who I interviewed on video. The eventual result was that an extension was agreed until 31 January 2020. A successful day.

Tell me your story

Liverpool for Europe was formed in the autumn of 2016 as a reaction to the result of the 2016 referendum. Like many other pro-EU groups, we were a disparate group of people who had not been aware of each other’s existence before and, in the main, politically inactive. Over nearly four years, we have come together as campaigners, activists and friends. The work of SODEM has been an inspiration to us and buoyed us up when events have appeared to be against us. Together, we have achieved great things and 31 January 2020 was one of the saddest days of my life. However, the fight goes on!
